Jennifer Heinrich, PTA, CLT, is certified in lymphedema therapy to effectively treat patients using Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) at our Warren office. CDT is the most effective treatment for chronic extremity lymphedema. CDT includes four components:
- Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) – This is a gentle, hands-on treatment that improves lymphatic system function, effective for post-surgical and post-injury swelling.
- Compression therapy – Multi-layered compression bandages are applied to help improve muscle efficiency. Repeat treatments help to break up excess fluid, and then patients can be fitted with compression garments.
- Exercise – These are performed with compression bandages in place to activate the muscles and increase activity in the lymphatic system, ultimately reducing swelling.
- Skin care – Infections are very common, so skin and nail care is extremely important to eliminate germs.
