McKenzie Method

The McKenzie Method ® is a comprehensive approach to the spine, designed to treat patients with the following conditions:

  • Bulging/herniated discs
  • Back & neck pain
  • Radicular or referred pain in to the arms
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Sciatica
  • Stensosis
  • Spine arthritis

McKenzie-certified physical therapists have completed additional training to become a spine specialist. This unique training includes a four-part course with a comprehensive written and practical exam. Hertel & Brown has two fully certified McKenzie therapists:  Aaron Hertel, MPT, Cert. MDT, and Jessica Morphy, DPT, Cert. MDT

During an evaluation, multi-directional movements are used to determine if they provoke pain or if the patient is limited in his/her movements. Pain patterns guide a patient’s treatment, which becomes simple: implement more movements that reduce pain and avoid movements that produce pain.

The therapist educates the patient on proper posture and body mechanics, which is vital to decreasing aggravating symptoms.

Once pain is reduced, the therapist works with the patient to re-establish a normal range of motion in all planes and regain full function and mobility. The therapist essentially teaches the patient to treat themselves with a preventative maintenance program to keep neck and/or back pain away for good.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based program designed to help individuals with acute and chronic symptoms of vertigo, dizziness and/or disequilibrium resulting from damage to the vestibular (inner ear) system.

We are excited to now offer the BioSway, a new tool for vestibular rehabilitation that can also be used to assist in the evaluation and treatment of a wide range of other conditions affecting balance.

Hertel & Brown Physical Therapy offers treatment for patients with the following conditions.

  • Vertigo
  • Dizziness
  • Dysequilibrium
  • Labyrinthitis/neuronitis
  • BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
  • Meniere’s Syndrome
  • Acoustic neuroma
  • Headaches caused by neck pain
  • Migraines
  • Post-concussive syndrome from sports-related and whiplash injuries

There are several types of dizziness, so the initial evaluation will focus on using tests to determine what kind of dizziness the patient is experiencing and if there are any signs or symptoms that require additional medical evaluation. Once the source of the problem is located, treatment will be based on what triggers the symptoms and the severity of those symptoms.

When the patient’s specific needs are determined, an individualized treatment plan is created with an emphasis on return to normal function. Treatment will consist of a series of progressive balance exercises that are designed to improve balance control and retrain the brain to process signals from the vestibular system.

Vestibular disorders and dizziness are also highly associated with balance and gait deficits, increasing fall risk and subsequent injury. Our highly trained therapists can identify individuals who are at risk for falls.

Individualized vestibular rehabilitation can help reduce symptoms of dizziness as well as improve balance impairments, enhancing quality of life and decreasing fall risk.
